Southeast Texas Senior Photographer | Kimberly

Do you ever have one of those Mondays where the transition for peaceful sleep to wide awake and frantically working seems non-existent? Those are the days I feel ‘off.’ Like I’m out of my groove and suddenly it is almost 1:00 and…how is that possible? Thanks daylight savings time change.

For many, this week begins spring break. It is a time to unwind, take a breath and get ready for the final sprint of the school year. For us that means we are gearing up for many late nights, busy weeks of shooting followed by the weekends with, oh yeah, more busy shoots! Honestly we look forward to these times. The ‘slowish’ time of the late winter allows us to re-evaluate our, well everything from our business practices to our overall work. As such we build up a lot of creative anticipation. There is no end to us trying to push ourselves to be ever more creative and deliver great images to our clients.

One such goal for us this year was to evolve our approach to our senior sessions. You may have noticed that our primary work is in the wedding world, but we really love working with seniors. For a creative outlet, a senior session allows us to work with an individual and really take time to explore, and go for some non-traditional looks. Our approach really showed here.

So what is different? First of all I’ll get the obvious out of the way and say that Kimberly is just so easy to work with. She is beautiful inside and out. Nothing makes a photographer look good like a natural beauty in front of the camera. But what did WE do that is different in way of photography? First off we’re working more with ‘light’ than we ever have. This is difficult to explain because in execution us working with artificial lighting or even using natural light in a non-typical way should not be obvious to the view other than to say “Woah! That’s a great photo!” Suffice to say we have been doing this a long time, but developing the sense to really see the subtle effects that different types of light has on a subject can be a life-time study. A natural light photographer may simply place someone in a shaded, evenly lit area with a sun cast look from behind and call it a day. In fact, I’d say that about 90% of photography you see today will go for that look, and for good reason: It’s easy, and it looks great. Our goal is not to reinvent the wheel, but we DO want to find unique ways to highlight the natural beauty of wonderful people like Kimberly.

We loved working on this shoot. Enjoy!
